Author: Friends of the Library of Collier
Average review score:

Excellent seafood cookery volume.
We recently returned from our first trip to Florida and found this volume in the rental house we occupied for a week. This cookbook, put together by Friends of the Library of Collier County, Inc is full of new and different recipes from local Naples and Marco Island residents. For a Northwesterner who is getting tired of the same old fish recipes, I found this to be a welcome addition to my seafood repretoire!

Construction Contracts
Published in Hardcover by Pearson Education POD (25 September, 1997)
Author: Keith Collier
Average review score:

Construction contracts are Fundamental to Design & Building
Try reading a standard form of construction contract. Dull! Yet it shapes relations among owners, designers, and builders. See how often a standard form is abused, by a lack or an abundance of changes that cannot be directly related by a reader. Even more than specifications, often the contract documents remain unread. "It's standard!" is a frequent comment: often, not so. Few lawyers will write about them, so who should? Someone who has written and worked with many contracts.

Convective Boiling and Condensation
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (June, 1994)
Author: John G. Collier
Average review score:

A renewed fundamental book
Possibly the single problem with the original version of "Convective Boiling and Condensation" by J.G. Collier was that it was getting too old. After the update made in the last versions with the work by J.R. Thome, the book has been renewed recovering the role of a fundamental textbook to be considered for both teaching and research. It is full of the best explanations you can find about several basic heat transfer mechanisms and provides precious suggestions for further reading and more in depth study. A nice book indeed.

Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers, Revised Edition
Published in Paperback by Teaching Strategies (01 January, 1997)
Authors: Amy Laura Dombro, Laura J. Colker, Diane Trister Dodge, and Laura J. Collier
Average review score:

Our curriculum of choice!
This is the curriculum adopted by our school district for Infant/Toddler Early Intervention programs and Pre K VE.

Pleasing and Practical!
It is difficult to find a comprehensive curriculum guide for infants and toddlers- but here it is! This book is well-organized and easy-to-read. It begins with basic information on developmental issues specific to infants and toddlers. Then it moves on to practical information on how to create an optimal environment for infants, toddlers, and their families. Information is culturally-sensitive and developmentally appropriate. There are numerous sample forms and program plans that professionals can use as a guide in creating an infant/toddler program. There are also vignettes that allow the reader to see how the information can be applied. I highly recommend this book as a reference for the professional working with this population!

Daughters of Thunder : Black Women Preachers and Their Sermons, 1850-1979
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (September, 1997)
Author: Bettye Collier-Thomas
Average review score:

Powerful stories & sermons of powerful, inspiring women
Ms. Collier-Thomas has written a flowing commentary on the tribulations of people called by God to preach and then battered in their odysseys to fulfill that calling because of their gender as well as their race. Ms. Collier-Thomas' prose is a joy to read. She sets the background in which each of these remarkable women worked, as well as recounting fairly and evenly the issues of contention they lived through. The book is worthwhile for the sermons alone -- the biographies and history make it a "must read" for feminists, historian, spiritual seekers, and Christians alike.

Don Carlos and Mary Stuart (World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (December, 1996)
Authors: Friedrich Schiller, Hilary Collier Sy-Quia, Peter Oswald, and J. C. F. Von Schiller
Average review score:

The work of a genius
It's hard to find words which do justice to these wonderful plays. Schiller is a genius, a german Shakespeare. The plays are full of fascinating characters, deep emotions and humanist ideals. Don't be surprised if you find youself sympathising with and understanding the enemys of the heroes. In Philipp II and Elizabeth I the inner torments of rulers surounded by false friends (Leichester, Alba), idealists(Posa, the spirit of liberty and friendship) and caught in there own fears, hopes and loves is poignantly illustrated. All in wonderfull words - read it in german if you possibly can! If you can't, DON'T miss it in english!!! You may find yourself identifying the situations in your life with those of the characters. These are plays to read over and over - always something new and worthwhile to discover.

Downriver
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (December, 1979)
Author: Peter Collier
Average review score:

Heart rending tale of self discovery, love, vengeance, justice.
It is obvious that Peter Collier was influenced by the upheavals of his era. This time piece is masterfully written with all of the angst of a young writer trying to achieve an identity in a time when the American identity was being torn apart. Cabell Hart, the disillusioned Berkley revolutionary, has yet to come to terms with the death of his Pop, with whom he has been ambivalent for too long, when he is thrust into an American nightmare. His sister has been raped and murdered, leaving her young son at the mercy of foster parents of questionable intent. Far from being quixotic, Cabe is reluctantly thrown into the roles of savior and hero. In his violent struggle to reclaim the last living reminder of his nuclear family, he experiences a profound personal epiphany and is in fact himself, saved. As an adolescent on the cusp of manhood, I read this book from an idealist's perspective. Now, as a grown man, I read this story from the perspective of a father protecting his own. Anyone who is intrigued by the social upheavals of the late sixties and Nixon eras will thrill in the perspective of a sensitive young radical deep inside the anarchist revolutionary movements of that time. Re-visit America-then.

Dressing Renaissance Florence: Families, Fortunes, and Fine Clothing
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (October, 2002)
Author: Carole Collier Frick
Average review score:

OUTSTANDING - Renaissance Florence students, take note!
I'm extremely impressed. I think this book would make an outstanding addition to any Renaissance-lover's, or garbaholic's, bookshelf.

It is not about how to make Italian-persona clothing. Instead, it focuses on how Florentines of the Renaissance used clothing to make social statements. Along the way, it examines some things that garbmakers would like hearing about (one table lists various color combinations found in gowns and linings), but mostly, it's about the sociology of fashion.

Chapters:

* Craftspeople and tailors (including how clothes-making guilds were organized and the role women played in these guilds)
* Tailoring Family Honor (how Florentines viewed honor and how they thought honor was expressed through clothing)
* Family Fortunes in Clothes (how much they spent, and a bit about the secondhand clothes market)
* The making of wedding gowns (you'll love learning how many opinions went into one and how totally political it all was)
* Trousseaux for Marriage and Convent (how they differed, and lists of what went into each)

And stuff about sumptuary law, information about layers of clothing, types of dyes (and an examination of mourning clothes), types of fabric, and clothes as depicted in art -- and how art might have distorted how people really wore clothes. Embroidery is also covered.

Needless to say, the painter Ghirlandaio features pretty prominently here. There are also b/w repros of portraits, unfortunately not super well detailed, but there are a few here I haven't seen before. There are also appendices that are very useful -- lists of currency and measures, categories of clothiers, yardage required for various garments, glossaries of what yardage terms meant, and a HUGE bibliography and glossary of terms.

It isn't a physically large book, clocking in at around 300pp, but it's very rich in detail, and the writing is pleasant to read. I'd definitely recommend this book to anybody wanting to immerse in the period -- and DEFINITELY for any Renaissance costumers out there. It might not be a bad idea to have some basic grounding in the period before reading this, but it's written well enough that if any is required, it isn't much.
